Although it seems like spring just began, the beginning of summer is fast approaching. Kids and teachers are counting the days until they’re free, and the temperatures are climbing into the 90s already. Fortunately, the folks at the Wyoming Recreation Center and the Aquatic Center have been working hard to prepare, and come Memorial Day weekend, they’ll be ready.

At the Aquatic Center, they’re filling the pool, cleaning everything until it sparkles, and training this year’s crop of lifeguards. In addition to the competition-sized pool, the Aquatic Center offers a splash park for youngsters, a water slide and lazy river, and a snack bar for refreshments. There are special events all summer long, as well as swimming lessons. You can learn more about pool hours, events, and memberships at the Aquatic Center website.

Day Camps

Inside the Recreation Center, preparations are under way for the annual Summer Day Camp, which is open to Little Explorers age 4-5, and for Day Campers from Kindergarten to Grade 7.

“Campers fill their days with a variety of activities including arts and crafts, games, free play/imaginative play, nature walks, gym games, the playground, and swimming every day,” says Rachel Leininger, Wyoming’s Director of Recreation and Citizen Engagement. Thursdays are field trip days, when campers go to the zoo, take a riverboat ride, or take in a Reds game. Kids can be enrolled on a daily or weekly basis; details can be found on the Recreation Center site.

For kids who enjoy competitive swimming, the Wyoming Seadragons swim team kicks off their season on May 25th with a party and swimsuit fitting, and swim practice begins May 30th.

The Seadragons have been competing since the early Eighties, says Laura Connock, President of the Parent Board. “The team originally swam in a little hole in the ground adjacent to Wyoming High School,” she notes. “The original pool building is still standing on the High School property, and is being used for equipment storage. We’ve been at the Wyoming Rec Center since its opening.” Last year about 195 kids swam on the team, which finished second of eight teams at the championship meet, and children of all grades and ability are invited to join. Renovated Fitness Center

Of course, the Recreation Center itself is open and newly renovated as well, featuring equipment, facilities, and classes that rival private gyms for a fraction of the cost. Says Leininger, “We have a brand new free weight section, a new six station machine, a variety of Nautilus machines that cater to all fitness levels, and a great selection of cardio equipment,” all in the new main floor workout room. For kids, adults, or seniors, the Recreation Center and Aquatics Center have something for everyone this summer.
